Senator asks Karim Benzema to lose French nationality and the Ballon d’Or
French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, accused the striker of having links to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Valérie Boyer, French senator from Bouches-du-Rhône (a department located in the south of France), asked this Wednesday for the withdrawal of the Ballon d’Or and French citizenship from Karim Benzema, if suspicions that the Al Ittihad striker has “links with the Muslim Brotherhood” are confirmed.
The French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, accused the forward of having links to the Muslim Brotherhood, the oldest Islamic organization in the Arab world and which is recognized as a terrorist group in several countries.
“If the Interior Minister’s statements are true, we must consider sanctions against Karim Benzema. An initially symbolic sanction would be to strip him of the Ballon d’Or. Finally, we will have to ask for the loss of his nationality. We cannot accept that a Frenchman with double nationality, known internationally, could dishonor and even betray his country in this way”, explains Valérie Boyer in a statement published on Twitter.
All the controversy surrounding Benzema comes three days after the French international came out to talk about the conflict in the Middle East, placing himself on the side of Palestine and the inhabitants of Gaza. “All our prayers for the inhabitants of Gaza, who are once again victims of these unjust bombings that do not spare women or children”, can be read in a publication by Benzema published on Sunday.
