Who is starting for the Mets?
Jose Butto, starting in place of the injured Carlos Carrasco, will make his fifth appearance (third start) of the 2023 season for the visitors.
The right-hander made a pair of starts in April, pitching to a 2.79 ERA (three runs over 9.2 innings) with the second outing coming against Washington. In that one, the 25-year-old allowed two runs on four hits over 4.2 innings but struggled with command as he walked six Nationals.
Overall, Butto has allowed seven runs on 12 hits over 14.2 innings in the majors this season, with 14 walks and 10 strikeouts for a 4.30 ERA (5.65 FIP) and 1.773 WHIP.
The majority of his appearances this year have come with Triple-A Syracuse where he has surrendered 63 runs (60 earned) on 99 hits in 91.0 innings over 19 starts for a 5.93 ERA and 1.626 WHIP. He has walked 49 batters and struck out 82.
Who is starting for the Nationals?
The home team will send out Joan Adon to get things started in the top of the first at Nats Park.
Wednesday night will be the right-hander’s eighth game and sixth start of the season. Adon has pitched to a 5.90 ERA (4.95 FIP) and 1.138 WHIP in 29.0 innings allowing 19 runs on 26 hits. The 25-year-old has been stung by five homers but walked just seven and struck out 23 on the year.
In his last start at home to Miami, Adon allowed five runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings. Curiously that poor outing came just five days after he blanked the Marlins over 6.0 innings allowing just three hits.
Upcoming schedule
The Mets will enjoy their second day off of the week on Thursday before concluding the quick road trip with a visit to the Twin Cities for a weekend series.
Kodai Senga (10-7, 3.08 ERA) looks to keep his bid for the NL Cy Young alive in his impressive debut season and he will face off against left-hander Dallas Keuchel (1-1, 5.06 ERA), a former AL Cy Young Award winner, for the Minnesota Twins.
