Aug. 25 – CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. – Ryggs Johnston of Libby lost his round of 32 match at the US Amateur Golf Championship on Aug. 16, 1-up.
Johnston, a standout at Arizona State, won in the round of 64. It lasted three extra holes.
In the round of 32, Johnston’s matchup with Auburn golfer Carson Bacha was back and forth. Johnston was 1-up after birdieing No. 1, one down after six, traveling even on No. 8 and then being two down to go to 12.
He birdied the par-3, as well as the par-3 15th and par-4 16th for a tie. The match was decided when Bacha bogeyed the 18th while Johnston made double bogey. He shot an even-par 71 at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Johnston, who won four Montana State individual championships for the Loggers, became the second Sun Devil men’s golfer in program history to win Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this year.
Johnston is the first Sun Devil in the 2022-23 athletic year to win a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a specific sport.
Johnston has a perfect 4.0 GPA in business administration. He graduated in May with his business management degree and a certificate in sports business.
