Story: FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation, after his unwanted kiss on Women’s World Cup winner Jenny Hermoso.
This is according to what was reported by the International Federation of Football Associations on Thursday (August 24).
The incident sparked outrage inside and outside Spain.
And it happened while Rubiales was presenting the Spanish players with their gold medals after they won the World Cup.
Hermoso said such actions should “never go unpunished”.
FIFA said in a statement that the incidents could constitute breaches of FIFA’s disciplinary code.
Rubiales, who initially called his critics “idiots,” issued a video apology late Monday (August 21).
But it failed to calm the uproar.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, Spain’s equality minister said this quote-
“It’s a way of sexual violence that we women suffer on a daily basis, that was hitherto invisible, and we can’t normalize it.”
The Spanish Women’s Football League called for Rubiales to be dismissed.
She also said she had lodged a complaint with the head of the National Sports Council about his “extremely dangerous actions and behavior”.
Hermoso said after the final that she did not enjoy Rubiales’ kiss.
She added on Wednesday that her union and agency are defending her interests on the matter.
